Why it's good to have school portfolios
Dear Mama,
It’s the end of the year, and I’m putting together my children’s portfolios. This year I’m making two.
I do believe it is good to make yearly portfolios so your children can see their progress, and they are wonderful keepsakes. I love to see how their handwriting improves over the years.
Each portfolio contains some sample work, a term exam, and an end-of-the-year reflection that contains a reflection on the curriculum, child, and myself, as a mother-teacher.
This year, we did a lot of it together. I told my girls that we can’t keep everything and to choose their favorite work to put into their portfolio. They were very excited to help and participate.
When the portfolios are complete, I put them in a bin. I will say choosing their favorite work can be hard. In a couple of cases, I decided to keep the entire notebook because they were so good.
I compile all their work and put it in a three-ring, pocket folder. This way it’s light and easy to put in a bin.
Do you keep work samples, or is it hard to get rid of their work?
Warmly,
Mama
