Why Charlotte Mason: Poetry
Dear Mama,
I never thought I would love poetry. But I have learned to love it thanks to Charlotte Mason. In fact, poetry was the one subject I was really hesitant to try when I started homeschooling.
I didn’t like poetry in school! It wasn't exciting. It was boring. It didn’t make any sense. The teachers broke it apart and instead of teaching poetry for its beauty, they stripped it of its beauty and focused on its mechanics.
It wasn’t until I started using the CM method and seeing how poetry was used as a fun way to learn how to read. My daughter picked up on reading quickly by reading poetry. We also started reading a poem a day at night and fell in love with it.
Poetry is basically a story with rhythm and rhyme. Cindy Rollins says, “Poetry is the highest form of language.”
In our home, we study one specific poem a month. We may or may not memorize it. At nigh,t we read one poem a day in our select poetry book. We are also starting to write our own nature poetry, which my daughter enjoys.
Poetry has become a favorite in our home.
Do you enjoy poetry?
Warmly,
Mirley
