What is your foundation for truth?
Dear Mama,
What is truth? According to Webster's dictionary, truth is “the body of real things, events, and facts”. This means it is absolute and cannot be refuted. This means that narratives and opinions are subject to refutation.
The next question is, where does truth come from? Who designed truth? This part may be tricky to answer. Some may say, “it’s common sense,” while others may say, “God designed truth”.
Let’s take a look at common sense. Common sense changes over time and according to cultural norms. This means that common sense cannot be your anchor for truth. Think about this: what was common sense fifty years ago is not common sense today, and what is common sense today will most likely not be common sense in the next fifty years.
Next, let’s look at how God designed truth. You can test the Bible, investigate it, and verify if it is true. Many historians and scientists believe this to be true. Atheists have investigated the Bible and come out the other end as Christians due to its reliability in truth.
In our home, the anchor and foundation for truth is the Bible. The Bible doesn’t change, God doesn’t change, regardless of what culture says is cool or woke at the moment. It is sturdy and timeless because what God created was good.
So, how should we, Christian parents, cultivate a strong foundation in our children?
Ever since we started homeschooling, we have studied the Bible every morning as part of our Morning Time. When we do, we get to know him and his design for our world. We learn about sin, grace, redemption, and truth.
I hope that by educating my children in the truth that God has outlined for us in the Bible and training them with apologetics, they will be strengthened in their relationship with God.
Warmly,
Mirley
