What is Mother Culture?
Dear Mama,
“Is there, then, not need for more ‘Mother Culture’?” -A
According to Karen Andreola, Mother Culture includes the way a mother manages her home and nourishes her mind, body, and soul. This helps bring tranquility and joy into the house. It is the good habits and rhythms she cultivates in her life.
Over time, following the publication of the mysterious article, the concept of Mother Culture has evolved to encompass the atmosphere of our home, the rhythms of our house, and the spiritual and inspiring ideas that enter our home.
Because we are made in the image of God, it is our duty to read His word daily, read novels, and read non-fiction. In addition to reading, it is also good to learn about beauty topics like poetry, hymns, handicrafts, art study, and composer study, which help us love beauty and become more well-rounded. I like to do this in the afternoon with a cup of tea.
By cultivating the habit of learning, we are helping our intellectual and spiritual life grow rather than putting it on hold. We are cultivating our souls.
Lady A (the mysterious author of the Parent’s Review article) says to carve out half an hour of your day to read. By reading and participating in the riches, the mother creates a home filled with truth, goodness, and beauty. This is what our children will remember us for.
If half an hour seems too much, break up the time into ten-minute intervals throughout the day, until you reach half an hour.
Lady A, says that one should read three books at a time: “A stiff book, a moderately easy book, and a novel.” Keep those books in a basket and place it at your bedside or in your mother’s corner and read the book that calls to you at the moment.
Lastly, always carry a book with you. My purse has to be big enough to carry a book wherever I go.
