Dear Mother-Teacher,
In the early 2000s, one of my former teachers and later master teacher and a group of social studies teachers came together to create the Teacher’s Curriculum Institute (TCI). They aimed to make history come alive by creating engaging lessons and notebooks. Today, TCI also includes science.
Their curriculum included engaging lessons and a different way to organize a notebook. Up until then, our work was placed in a binder. They decided that a single notebook for their subject was the best way to organize their class work. They came up with right-hand and left-hand page notebooks.
The objective was to create beautiful, organized, engaging notebooks that students could use as study notes and be proud of.
Here is how the notebooks are organized:
* Right-hand page: Narrations and illustrations
* Left-hand page: Extras
Extras include any additional information that was addressed in the lesson. The point of including extras is to show evidence for the narration. Examples include maps, poetry, charts, music, speeches, or anything else.
The objective of the interactive notebooks is for students to show knowledge and understanding of the lesson.
