“A nature-diary is a source of delight to a child.”
- Charlotte Mason
Dear Mother-Teacher,
Nature Study is one of the areas that attracted me to Charlotte Mason. I loved the idea of going outside and observing nature, learning to care for it, and recording it.
According to Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of the Boy Scouts, nature notebooks were started with Charlotte Mason. Nature notebooks allow children to develop a habit of recording nature, which can lead to studying more difficult science in the future.
Nature notebooks become a diary of sorts. It should include the date, illustration, photographs, or pressed plants. Nature notebooks should include a brief description of the day, and the children may choose the medium for their notebooks. You will see their knowledge and love for the world around them grow.
I believe it is good to keep a nature notebook. One of my favorite observations is watching my children get excited about a plant, a tree, or a creek and record their observations in their notebooks without me telling them to do so. They are in awe of the changes in nature.
Do you keep a nature notebook?
Yours faithfully,
- Mirley
