My Take on History Narrations
Dear Mama,
Narrations are a key component of a Charlotte Mason education. The purpose of a narration is for students to retell the story they just heard in their own words.
Narrations are excellent because they encourage children to listen carefully to what is being read or taught. Although Charlotte said not to correct a child when telling a narration, I can’t help but do so.
In my opinion, here are the basics of a narration. Note*** my approach is a blend of Miss Charlotte and what I learned and taught as a teacher. I would only start this style in the fourth grade.
Narration Basics beginning in the Fourth Grade
1. Who/What
Begin by stating what they are discussing. This could even be in the form of a question. Ex: Have you ever heard of the Black Plague?
2. When/where
Provide essential details, such as names, dates, and locations. This may ruffle some feathers, but it’s necessary to know where certain events in world history fall on the timeline. Children should not think World War I came before the Civil War.
3. Give details
This is the best place for students to share everything they remember about the event in their own words.
4. Why does it matter?
When it comes to history, it is always important to know the impact a certain event had on human history. For example, the Treaty of Versailles was a major cause of World War II. It is suitable for your child to know and understand that.
Although my example is not purely Charlotte Mason, I do believe it’s a good blend and one that works in the long run.
Any questions on my approach?
Warmly,
Mirley
