How We Do Nature Studies
“From the flower in the crannied wall to the glorious firmament on high, all the things of Nature proclaim without ceasing, ‘Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty’ ” (Charlotte Mason, Ourselves, Book 2, p. 100).
Dear Mama,
Nature studies is the one subject that I cannot do on my own. I don’t know what it is, but I struggle to do school outside.
Fortunately, we live in an area with a wonderful homeschool group. This group does nature study, and I am loving it.
Once a month, we go out as a group and observe a tree. We see its changes from month to month. It is so fun to see the small changes each month brings. The best part about doing nature study in a group is that I get to participate!
One thing I’ve noticed about nature study is that every time I take note of the tree I’m observing, I draw it differently. One part of that is the changing seasons, but another part is that I am noticing different details of the tree. It’s really fun to see how my eyes are being trained to notice the details of nature.
To make my nature notebook, I use a watercolor journal and watercolors. I’m inspired by the work of Edith Holden, author of The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady.
Some subjects are best done at home as a family, and others, like nature study, are best done in groups.
What subjects do you prefer to do as a group?
Warmly,
Mirley
