How to do Picture Study
Dear Mama,
It had come to my attention that many families skip over art study. However, Charlotte Mason saw the value in children being able to identify great works of art. She said, “We cannot measure the influence that one or another artist has upon the child’s sense of beauty, upon his power of seeing, as in a picture, the common sights of life; he is enriched more than we know in having really looked at even a single picture”, Charlotte Mason, (Vol. 1, p. 309).
Picture study is a wonderful way to bring beauty into the home. Every term, you pick an artist to study. Select a picture from the artist and observe the picture quietly for about 2-5 minutes. After observing the painting, turn the picture over and have your students narrate or describe the painting. This practice teaches students to focus their attention on what is in front of them.
As you study the paintings, teach the children about the artist’s life and what inspired him or her to create such beauty. Each painting has a story, and it is good to share that story with your children as well. This background information should be kept short and sweet.
It is so wonderful to see the children get excited about seeing artists’ art around town. They love visiting art museums and stare at the paintings. Recently, my daughter spotted a Picasso painting we had not even studied. She knew it was him based on his style, which we had studied last school year.
Finally, if you are able, display the art pictures around your house so your children can recognize them. This practice will help your students grow fond of art and remember it better.
What other tips can you share about art study?
Warmly,
Mirley
