How Charlotte Mason Influenced My Motherhood
Dear Mama,
“A mother who wears many hats must find time for Mother Culture.” - Karen Andreola, Charlotte Mason Companion, p. 350.
Although Charlotte Mason was neither married nor a mother, she had a deep respect and love for mothers. She knew and understood that mothering was hard. In addition, being a mother-teacher was especially difficult.
It is for this reason that she emphasized the need for the mother to make time for herself and grow intellectually, as well as develop her skills. She also believed a mother needed to train her temper to be more gentle.
Charlotte Mason has not only helped me grow stronger in my relationship with the Lord, but she has also helped me in my motherhood by emphasizing the importance of having a steady temper and making time for reading good books.
I now bake bread every week and am learning to paint with watercolors. Soon I’ll be planning my own garden in my own home. These are skills that I never imagined I would have and would never have had if I had remained a public school teacher.
I must add that my temper is also much more self-controlled, but I think that comes with years of experience.
Following the Charlotte Mason method has opened up numerous opportunities to acquire new skills. Charlotte Mason’s educational process isn’t just for children; it’s for mothers, too.
If you use the Charlotte Mason method, how has she influenced your motherhood journey?
Warmly,
Mirley
