Homeschool Evolution Part II
Dear Mama,
On Monday, I wrote about Charlotte Mason’s three pillars of education: atmosphere, discipline, and life. You can go back to the last post to read it.
Today, I want to write about how our homeschool evolved using her three categories of knowledge: knowledge of God, knowledge of Man, and Knowledge of the Universe.
I. Knowledge of God
Our days began with the Bible, Prayer, and a Hymn. The purpose is to teach our children that God is the foundation of truth and that all things true, good, and beautiful point to God. I love seeing how my children are growing in wisdom and love for Christ. They enjoy singing hymns, and my daughter is even trying to learn how to play them on the piano.
II. Knowledge of Man
This category includes history, literature, language arts, art, and music. History is my favorite subject. I taught history for 6.5 years. I love the CM approach to using living books as a way to teach history instead of textbooks. However, I did notice that the switching from book to book wasn’t my daughter’s favorite way of learning. My daughter did fall in love with literature. I could tell it sparks her imagination.
III. Knowledge of the Universe
Knowledge of the universe includes Science, Geography, Mathematics, Physical Education, and Handicrafts.
This was my daughter’s favorite category. We used Masterbooks for science and Burgess Animal Book for nature study. She loved learning about all the animals and how God created this world. For math, we used Math-u-see, which is a straightforward math program. She got it and enjoyed it. For geography, we used the Masterbooks geography book and a workbook I found on Amazon. For PE we used YouTube videos and on handcrafts…well let’s just I need to improve on that area.
All in all, this was a wonderful school year. I’m looking forward to improving all the mistakes I made and having a smoother homeschool experience next year.
In what areas do you feel like you could improve next year?
Warmly,
Mirley
