Hallmark of a Charlotte Mason Education: Nature Study
Dear Mama,
“We are all meant to be naturalists, each in his own degree, and it is inexcusable to live in a world so full of the marvels of plant and animal life and to care for none of these things.” - Charlotte Mason
Nature study includes art, poetry, writing, listening, and observation. It is an all-inclusive subject that helps us acknowledge our Creator.
Nature study is so simple that I can sometimes make it more complicated than it is. You don’t need much to have a joyful nature study.
First, find a regular time of the week to go outside to a nature spot. If you can’t do that, go to your backyard or start with indoor plants.
Second, allow your child to focus their eyes on something, such as a plant, flower, insect, or creature.
Third, give your child as much time as needed to observe and listen to the sounds surrounding him.
Lastly, draw and write down your observations in a nature journal. If your child doesn’t like to draw, have him take a picture and paste it into their notebook.
Nature study is a time to focus on our Creator and enjoy His creation. It is a time we all look forward to.
What tips do you have for nature study?
Warmly,
Mirley
