Family Game Night
Dear Mama,
For a while, I’ve been trying to put together a weekly game night where we come together as a family and connect.
I believe game nights are a great way for us to cultivate our own family culture. But more importantly, games develop skills that are good for maturing.
1. Connect: Game nights are a great way to come together and connect as a family. We talk, we discuss, and we get to know each other better.
2. Character: Games build character. Games are a great way for children to learn to lose and understand that in life, we sometimes lose. Yes, there will be tears, but those tears teach us to be more compassionate and patient.
3. Critical thinking skills: Last night, I was playing checkers with my daughter and beat her twice easily. By the third time, she had locked me in! She was starting to see all the moves on the board! I eventually won, but she set up a great strategy.
4. Cleanliness: Lastly, when the games are done being played with, we come together and clean up as a family. Cleanliness is a skill that has to be taught, and game night is a great time to do so.
What I like about game night, too, is that it forces me to slow down. In doing so, I’m actually able to play games with my children, which I love.
Do you have a designated family game night?
Warmly,
Mirley
