Charlotte Mason’s Principles #18-20
Dear Mama,
Today, we finish up Charlotte Mason’s principles. Last time, we discussed The Way of the Will, which focuses on developing the strength to do what is right in God’s eyes, even when it is difficult.
When our will is weak or selfish, we can reason our way to doing what is wrong. This doesn’t mean reason is bad, but reason founded in our feelings can lead one down a dark path. Let’s not forget about Robespierre, who created the Cult of Reason during the French Revolution. We all know how that went down.
However, reason anchored in God’s word is beneficial because it helps us develop wisdom. We need reason to be able to discern lies from truth and right from wrong.
Here are some questions to help guide a child onto the right path:
1. Does this choice honor God?
2. Does this idea nourish my soul?
3. Are my ideas aligned with God’s Word?
The answers to these questions will help them see if their ideas are true, good, and beautiful.
Charlotte Mason’s method is founded on centuries of wisdom and effective educational practices. Our children are not machines; they are born persons, which is why giving them a feast of subjects is so important.
Remember, “Education is the science of Relations”. This means that all education is interconnected. More importantly, it is all connected to God’s world, even in the “secular” subjects like Math and Science. That is because he is the Creator of our world. We cannot separate him from our lives. When we learn in this manner, we become more like Him. We learn to love and care about the feast.
I hope you have enjoyed this series. Charlotte Mason’s principles are the foundation of the method.
Warmly,
Mirley
