Charlotte Mason Principle #8
Dear Mama,
Charlotte Mason loved to use food as a metaphor for how our students can learn. This is where the word “feast” comes to play.
In my daily schedule, I have a section for the feast. This part of the day is where I focus on the more challenging subjects, such as history and science.
Charlotte believed that, just like humans need good, healthy food to survive and be nourished, so too does the brain need good, living books to grow in knowledge and understanding of the world we live in.
This is why it is so important for us to read good living books. Good living books help nourish the soul! Such books should feel like we are going on an adventure with them, rather than books that feel like we are carrying a massive stone on our backs. (You know those books.) Instead, books should spark our curiosity to learn more.
Reading good books should not be confined only to school hours. When we expose our children to good books from an early age, they will become lifelong learners, which is what “education is a life” means.
Can you name a living book from your childhood that sparked your curiosity?
Warmly,
Mirley
