Charlotte Mason Principle #5
Dear Mama,
Principle #5 is the introduction of a series of principles.
In principle number five, we see the three pillars that comprise a well-rounded education, enabling us to create lifelong learners.
* Pillar #1 Education is an Atmosphere
This pillar focuses more on the energy in the room than on its aesthetics. Although cleanliness and beautiful displays in the room add to the atmosphere, if the Mother-Teacher is regularly tense, it does not provide for a calm learning environment.
* Pillar #2 Education is a Discipline
This pillar discusses the habits we cultivate as individuals and as a family. The habits we have are actually a part of our ingrained character. Therefore, it is essential to teach our children and ourselves how to form good habits and break bad habits.
* Pillar #3 Education is a Life
This pillar refers to ideas. Ideas come from God, and it is therefore essential that we begin with the foundation that all truth originates from God. Let’s go back to the first principle that “children are born persons”. Everyone has a gift, and as Mother-Teachers, we are to help the children discover their gifts and give them the time and tools to learn and flourish in them. We do this by giving them “a generous curriculum.”
Over the next couple of months, we will delve more deeply into each pillar.
Warmly,
Mirley
