Author Spotlight: John Bunyan
Dear Mama,
Happy Wednesday! Today in the #livingbooklegacy group, we are focusing on a favorite author.
For my favorite author, I want to share the most popular books by John Bunyan, who wrote The Pilgrim’s Progress, Parts I and II.
The versions I’m sharing with you are from @lithoskids. This version has been modified to use simpler language, making it easier for both children and adults to understand.
John Bunyan was imprisoned in 1661 for preaching the Bible as it is. This went against King Charles and the Church of England.
It is said that John Bunyan stated on two speaking occasions, “I will stay in prison till moss grows on my eyelids rather than disobey God.” And, “I will stay in jail to the end of my days before I make a butchery of my conscience.”
While in jail, he wrote Part I of the Pilgrim’s Progress, which is an allegory of what temptations and difficulties Christians face here on earth. The story was published six years after having been released from prison in 1672.
The allegory follows the journey of Christian, who leaves his family and heads out to the celestial city. All of the names of people and places have a Biblical and Theological meaning. Some versions of the story include the Biblical text John Bunyan was referring to.
The Pilgrim’s Progress was such a success that people wanted to know what happened to Christian’s family. So, he wrote Part II showing the journey of Christiana and their children to the Celestial City.
It is said that The Pilgrim’s Progress is the second most sold book after the Bible.
Elizabeth Elliot said in a lecture that The Pilgrim’s Progress should be read every year. I agree entirely and plan to do so.
Have you read the Pilgrim’s Progress? If so, which edition?
P.S. Be sure to check out what favorite authors my friends are sharing today.
Warmly,
Mirley
