2020-2021 Homeschool Lessons Learned
Dear Mama,
We finally wrapped up this school year. We were able to transition smoothly into homeschooling due to the pandemic.
We started school in Virginia, and halfway through the year, we moved to California, where my husband is now stationed.
I must admit homeschooling was a huge learning curve. I wasn’t sure what curriculum to buy, and although some curricula were pretty and magical on Instagram, they didn’t work for me. So with that said, here are some lessons I learned from homeschooling this year.
1. It’s okay to change your curriculum if it doesn’t work for you and your children. I knew homeschooling was flexible, but the ability to change curriculum made things so much better for us.
2. Don’t get sidetracked. Once I learned I could change the curriculum, I got excited to try it all. That's not a good idea either. One ends up spending too much money and getting lost in the process.
3. Stick to a method. Once you have discovered your method of choice, mine being Charlotte Mason, use only curricula that support that method and avoid venturing out.
4. Follow fewer accounts. One way to get lost and overly excited about the fantastic ideas that homeschool families are doing is by following too many accounts. I have set a limit for myself on the number of accounts I follow, and doing so keeps me grounded and focused on what matters.
5. Lastly, make it your own. Homeschooling doesn’t look the same for any family. Feel free to add or remove as needed.
I truly enjoyed homeschooling, and I look forward to continuing this journey in the future.
Warmly,
Mirley
